Legion of Mary at Mary Mother of God

Legion of Mary

The Legion of Mary is a worldwide association of Catholics who have formed themselves into a body to be of service to the church. Mary the Immaculate is the model and through her its members seek to present Christ to everyone.

The objective is the spiritual formation of all confirmed members of the church through prayer and the lay apostolic work to realize their vocation to holiness.

Our parish Praesidium (this is what a parish Legion of Mary group is known as) is called Our Lady Seat of Wisdom. We meet each Sunday at 4pm in the Parish Hall. You are most welcome to join us.

Legion of Mary

The legion holds a weekly meeting, which begins with the invocation of the Holy Spirit followed by the recitation of the Rosary, spiritual readings, talks and a discussion. The main features of the meeting are the reports of apostolic work assigned to the members. The meetings last no longer than an hour and a half.

The legion of Mary undertakes many forms of apostolic work directed by the parish priest and it is also an extension of God’s ministry into the parish.

The work takes no more than two hours of one’s time each week. It can range from home visitations, census work, visitation of the lapsed, care of the sick, elderly and housebound, hospital visits etc.

Praying for Parishioners’ intentions

Every Wednesday evening at 7 pm we hold a time of prayer where we place the intentions of all parishioners at the feet of Our Lady and ask for her intercession.

This time together includes some singing, praying the Rosary together as well as the Litany of Our Lady. In the summer months this time of prayer is held in the parish garden before the grotto of Our Lady. You are very welcome to join us.

What we do in the Legion of Mary

We play a role in supporting our priest in the church; some of us assist in the Parish repository, some regularly read at masses, are Eucharistic Ministers, clean the church each week and some of our members also try to be present at funeral masses to pray for the intentions of the faithful departed and their families etc. There are even some opportunities for socialising together!

We welcome new members, either seeking spiritual solace or eager to get more involved in the life and ministry of the church. In all our work we aim to raise awareness in people of the spiritual life seeking at all times to see Christ in everyone.

Just come along to our Parish Hall at 4pm on a Sunday. You will be most welcome.

Applying for Membership

To be an active legionary it is necessary to apply for membership in a praesidium, which holds a weekly meeting and allocates a weekly apostolic task to the members, who generally work in pairs. After a successful period of probation, members are called to make the Legionary Promise (this is only applicable for members over 18 years) which is directed to the Holy Spirit. Realising the necessity for a strong support of prayer, the Legion has Auxiliary members, who associate themselves with the Legion by undertaking a service of prayer in its name. The administration of the Legion is carried out through its various councils at local, regional and national level. The central council, the Concilium Legionis Mariae, meets monthly in Dublin

Mary invites you to join her Legion! “I am all yours, my Queen, my Mother, and all that I have is yours.”

Heroes of the Catholic Society

There are three Legion heroes who are outstanding role models in holiness.
